Norfolk – Lumber Liquidators, The Port of Virginia's largest local import customer and a company with a growing presence in the Commonwealth, is the 2014 recipient of The Port of Virginia's Shipper of the Year award
This award, which will be presented May 8 at the Virginia Maritimes Association's annual symposium, recognizes a company that has gone above and beyond the course of normal business to help the port grow both commercially and operationally.
John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, said the selection of Lumber Liquidators took into account these facts:
- After considering other locations, Lumber Liquidators committed to remain in Virginia;
- It is making a significant investment ($60 million) at its new site in Henrico County;
- The investment is leading to job creation (250 jobs over three years) in James City County and elsewhere; and
- The company is the largest Virginia-based importer using the Port of Virginia.
"The company's logistics team is also very proactive in regard to working with us to improve our services and as a vocal member of the VMA's Shipper's Committee," Reinhart said. "The company has been based in Virginia for the last 15 years and during that time it has shown a lot of confidence in our ability to handle its growing volume of containers."
As one of the largest hardwood flooring and home improvement retailers in the United States, Lumber Liquidators is using The Port of Virginia to import and export wood products for domestic and international markets. In addition, the company has undertaken a pilot project to increase the use of Virginia-grown wood in its product mix.
